Sabarmati Riverbank Demolition Clears 700 Illegal Structures
Massive crackdown on 700 illegal structures along Gandhinagar's Sabarmati riverbank.
In a dramatic pre-dawn operation, the Gandhinagar civic administration, in collaboration with the state Roads and Buildings (R&B) department and local police, launched an extensive demolition drive to clear approximately 700 illegal structures encroaching on government land along the Sabarmati riverbank in Gujarat’s capital.
The operation, which began at 4:00 AM in the Pethapur area, targets encroachments spanning 1 lakh square metres of land, valued at an estimated Rs 1,000 crore in the market.
According to District Superintendent of Police Ravi Teja Vasamsetty, the effort involves 20 dedicated teams from the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the R&B department, supported by a robust deployment of 700 police personnel, including senior officers, to ensure smooth execution. By Thursday afternoon, approximately 150 illegally constructed houses and shops had already been demolished, with ongoing efforts to clear the remaining structures.
The operation aims to reclaim valuable government land along the Sabarmati riverbank, which has been unlawfully occupied by a variety of structures, including residential buildings and commercial establishments. Authorities expect the demolition drive to be completed within two to three days, restoring the encroached land for public use.
This large-scale initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to tackling illegal encroachments and preserving public property in Gandhinagar.
