Sabarimala Gold Heist: Arrested CPI Leader Sankaradas Moved to Govt Hospital

CPI leader K.P. Sankaradas, arrested in Sabarimala gold heist, shifted from private to government hospital.

Former Travancore Devaswom Board member and senior CPI leader K.P. Sankaradas, arrested in connection with the Sabarimala gold heist, was shifted from a private hospital to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on Saturday. The move comes as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) accelerates its probe ahead of a crucial deadline set by the Kerala High Court.

Sankaradas, who was taken into custody on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital, was examined by a jail doctor on Saturday. Following a review of his medical records, authorities decided that continued treatment at a government medical college hospital was necessary, rather than at the jail facility.

The sudden intensification of the investigation coincides with heightened judicial scrutiny. On Monday, the SIT is expected to submit a detailed status report to the Kerala High Court, which had previously criticized the delay in arresting Sankaradas, the last of three Travancore Devaswom Board members named in the case.

The case has attracted significant political attention, as Sankaradas’ son is a senior Kerala Police official and a prominent CPI leader. Allegations of political shielding have gained traction, particularly as the High Court considers a plea filed by BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar seeking a CBI probe into the gold heist.

Opposition leaders have closely monitored the SIT’s progress. V.D. Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition, noted that while former Devaswom Minister and senior CPI(M) legislator Kadakampally Surendran has been questioned, further action remains pending. The Congress-led UDF has reiterated calls for the investigation to reach higher political echelons.

With senior CPI and CPI(M) leaders already in custody, the upcoming SIT report to the Kerala High Court will be crucial in determining whether the probe is comprehensive and credible, or merely reactive to judicial pressure. The coming days are expected to define the trajectory of the high-profile Sabarimala gold heist investigation.
