S Jaishankar: Every Effort Made To Evacuate Indians Amid Iran Conflict
Jaishankar tells Parliament: Full efforts to safely return Indians from West Asia.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the escalating conflict in West Asia, particularly the ongoing war involving Iran, during a statement in the Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2026. Amid disruptions from opposition protests, Jaishankar emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the situation, with the government prioritizing the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the region. Jaishankar highlighted India's deep concern over the intensified security environment and reiterated calls for restraint, civilian protection, and a return to peaceful resolutions.
The minister specifically addressed the plight of Indians affected by the conflict, stating that every effort is being made to bring back those stuck or stranded. He pointed out that while nearly one crore Indians live and work across Gulf nations, a few thousand are in Iran itself—primarily students and professionals facing heightened risks due to strikes and instability. Jaishankar assured the House that the government is actively working through diplomatic channels, including contacts with relevant authorities, to facilitate safe evacuations and provide necessary assistance. This includes exploring alternative routes, such as land corridors via neighboring countries like Armenia or Turkmenistan, for those in Iran.
Jaishankar's remarks come against the backdrop of widespread disruptions caused by the war, including airspace closures, flight cancellations, and direct threats from military actions. Reports indicate thousands of Indian students, many from Jammu and Kashmir, remain in cities like Tehran and Qom, with urgent pleas from associations for immediate relocation. The Ministry of External Affairs has set up emergency helplines and is coordinating with embassies to monitor developments and assist affected citizens. Earlier Cabinet discussions focused on the vulnerability of the large Indian diaspora in the broader Middle East.

The statement underscores India's balanced approach: advocating de-escalation while safeguarding national interests, including energy security and the welfare of its expatriate community. Jaishankar stressed that stability in West Asia is critical for India as a neighboring region with significant stakes. He dismissed any notion of losing strategic autonomy, affirming that humanitarian considerations and diplomatic engagement guide India's response amid the volatile crisis.
As the conflict continues with reported strikes and retaliations, the government remains committed to using all feasible measures to ensure the safe return of its citizens. Further updates on evacuation progress and diplomatic efforts are expected as the situation evolves.
