Russia’s Sarmat Missile: All About Nuclear-Capable ICBM With Multi-Warhead Capability

Russia’s Sarmat missile is a nuclear-capable ballistic system.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia plans to deploy its nuclear-capable Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile by the end of the year, marking a major step in the country’s ongoing strategic weapons modernisation programme. The announcement was made during a televised meeting with senior military officials.

Putin described the Sarmat missile as “the most powerful missile in the world,” highlighting its advanced capabilities and long-range strike potential. He further stated that the combined yield of its multiple independently targetable warheads is significantly higher than that of comparable systems operated by Western countries, underscoring Russia’s emphasis on strategic deterrence.

The development comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions between Russia and Western nations, with Moscow continuing to invest heavily in next-generation military systems. The Sarmat programme is widely viewed as a key component of Russia’s nuclear triad, designed to ensure long-range strike capability from land-based platforms.

During the meeting, Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces commander Sergey Karakayev informed President Putin that the missile had undergone a successful test. He added that the first regiment equipped with the Sarmat system is expected to be placed on combat duty in the Krasnoyarsk region by the end of the year.The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile is designed to replace older Soviet-era systems and is intended to enhance Russia’s strategic reach with the ability to carry multiple warheads and penetrate advanced missile defence systems.

Officials have framed its deployment as part of routine military modernisation and deterrence planning.The announcement reflects Russia’s continued focus on expanding its strategic arsenal amid ongoing global security tensions, with the Sarmat system positioned as one of the centrepieces of its long-range nuclear capability.
