Russian Strikes Kill 16 In Kyiv, Leaving Ukraine's Capital Facing Devastation And Fear
Russian strikes kill 16 in Kyiv.
At least 16 people were killed in overnight Russian bombardments targeting Kyiv and surrounding areas, Ukrainian authorities said Thursday, as President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the international community to respond to what he described as an escalation of the four-year war. The strikes caused widespread destruction across the Ukrainian capital, with emergency crews searching damaged buildings for survivors and recovering bodies from the rubble. Rescuers worked through the early morning hours at several locations across Kyiv, including buildings that were heavily damaged during the attacks. A children's hospital was among the facilities affected by the bombardment.
At a damaged apartment block, grieving relatives and residents watched as rescuers recovered two bodies from the debris. Emergency personnel continued searching destroyed structures as authorities assessed the scale of the damage caused by the overnight strikes. Residents described scenes of fear and destruction as the attacks unfolded. Maria Abramova, a 45-year-old resident of Kyiv, said she had rushed to her children's room after an air raid warning was issued when explosions began. The blasts shattered windows in her home and, according to her account, nearly killed her husband. “There used to be a building here, and now it's gone,” she said, describing the destruction left behind by the strikes.
The attacks highlight the continuing threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles to Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Moscow has increasingly used ballistic missiles in strikes on the capital, with the weapons travelling at speeds of thousands of kilometres per hour. Their rapid flight means they can reach Kyiv within minutes after an air raid warning, leaving residents and emergency services with limited time to seek shelter or respond to the threat. The overnight bombardment came as the Russia-Ukraine war continues into its fourth year, with civilian areas repeatedly exposed to missile and drone attacks.

The strikes have placed significant pressure on Ukraine's air-defence systems and emergency services, while repeated attacks on urban areas have caused deaths, injuries and damage to civilian infrastructure. The impact on hospitals and residential buildings has further intensified concerns about the safety of civilians during the conflict. Zelensky called for a stronger international response to Russia's latest attacks, describing them as an escalation of the war. His appeal came as Ukrainian authorities dealt with the immediate consequences of the strikes and emergency workers continued rescue and recovery operations.
Kyiv has repeatedly urged its international partners to strengthen support for Ukraine's air-defence capabilities and help protect populated areas from Russian missile attacks. The latest strikes underscore the continuing dangers faced by civilians in Kyiv, where residents can have only minutes to react after an air raid alert. As rescue teams continued searching through damaged buildings, the death toll from the overnight bombardment stood at at least 16, according to authorities. Further casualties or damage could emerge as emergency services complete their work at the affected sites.
