Russian Strike Kills Four in Kyiv Region as Peace Talks Stall Over Middle East War
Three were critically wounded as strikes damaged homes, schools and infrastructure across four districts.
At least four people were killed and more than 15 others wounded in a large‑scale Russian missile and drone strike on the Kyiv region overnight into Saturday, Ukrainian officials said, marking one of the deadliest assaults on the area in recent weeks. Local authorities reported that three of the wounded were in critical condition, with two undergoing surgery following the attack that struck multiple districts across the region.
The combined aerial barrage hit at least four districts around the Ukrainian capital, damaging residential buildings, schools, businesses and critical infrastructure, including energy facilities that left parts of the region without power. Rescue services worked through the night to assist the injured and assess structural damage as residents sheltered in basements and shelters during the early morning strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the primary targets of the overnight assault were energy infrastructure sites, noting that Russian forces launched an unusually large number of weapons, including several hundred drones alongside dozens of missiles. Ukrainian air defences intercepted many of the projectiles, but the scale of the attack overwhelmed some systems, underscoring ongoing challenges in protecting civilian areas.

The renewed violence comes amid a diplomatic pause in efforts to secure peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Negotiations that were scheduled for this week were postponed by the United States, which cited the escalating conflict in the Middle East as the reason its delegation could not travel, delaying discussions aimed at resolving the nearly four‑year‑long war.
Zelenskyy has sharply criticised a temporary U.S. waiver on sanctions targeting Russian oil, warning that the measure could funnel billions of dollars into Moscow’s war effort and hinder efforts to bring about a ceasefire. He also urged Western partners to accelerate the production and delivery of air defence systems to counter the growing intensity of Russian aerial attacks.
Despite claims from both Kyiv and Moscow of progress on various fronts, the conflict shows no sign of abating. Russian forces continue near‑daily strikes on Ukrainian civilian areas, while Ukrainian counter‑offensives and drone raids have targeted strategic facilities inside Russia. As global attention remains partly focused on the Middle East, analysts and Ukrainian officials warn that the war in Ukraine could become further marginalised on the international stage.
