RPP-NPF Merger Reshapes Nagaland Politics As Neiphiu Rio Champions Naga Unity
RPP merges with NPF, boosting Naga unity efforts.
The Rising People's Party (RPP) of Nagaland on Saturday formally merged with the ruling Naga People's Front (NPF), with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio describing the development as a convergence of "people, ideas, experiences and aspirations" aimed at serving the larger interests of the Naga community. The merger announcement was made during a public programme held in Kohima, where RPP leaders joined the NPF in the presence of senior party members and supporters.
Welcoming the RPP leadership into the NPF, Rio, who is also the president of the Naga People's Front, said the merger represented more than just the coming together of two political organisations. He said it reflected a broader effort to unite political forces and strengthen collective efforts towards addressing issues important to the people of Nagaland. According to Rio, the move would help consolidate regional voices and contribute to greater unity among the Naga people.
The RPP was established on October 2, 2020, and received registration from the Election Commission of India in June 2021. Led by Joel Naga, the party had positioned itself as a regional political alternative, focusing on issues such as clean governance, transparency and electoral reforms. It sought to present a different political approach in Nagaland, where regional identity and the long-standing Naga political issue have remained central themes in public discourse.

However, the party failed to win any seats in the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections and currently has no representation in the 60-member state Assembly or in any urban local bodies. Despite its limited electoral success, the RPP had remained active in raising concerns related to governance and political reforms. The merger with the NPF now marks a significant shift in the party's political journey and places its leaders within the state's ruling political framework.
Addressing the gathering, Rio highlighted the importance of unity among political groups in Nagaland, particularly in the context of the long-pending Naga political issue. He said the state's opposition-less government reflects the collective decision of elected representatives to work together towards a common goal. The chief minister emphasised that finding a resolution to the decades-old political issue remains a top priority for both the NPF and the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) government.
"The Naga political issue remains at the very top of the agenda of the Naga People's Front and the PDA government," Rio said. He added that the NPF would continue to act as an active facilitator in creating an environment conducive to an early solution to the issue. The chief minister has repeatedly maintained that political unity and cooperation among stakeholders are essential for meaningful progress in negotiations related to the Naga peace process.
The merger comes at a time when political parties in Nagaland continue to focus on strengthening regional cooperation and finding common ground on issues affecting the state. With the RPP joining the NPF, the ruling party is expected to gain additional organisational support, while the merger also signals a renewed emphasis on political consolidation and collective efforts towards addressing Nagaland's long-standing challenges.
