Rope-Tied Pen at Mumbai Airport: When Small Details Define National Image

Viral video highlights Mumbai Airport's inadequate pen arrangement at form counter.

A viral social media video showing a pen refill tied with a rope at a form-filling counter inside Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has sparked widespread discussion online, prompting an official response from airport authorities. The clip, shared by travel content creator Deepak Samal, humorously described the arrangement as providing “Z-plus security” to a pen refill and questioned whether such a sight would leave a positive impression on international visitors arriving in India for the first time.

In the video, Samal pointed out that travellers were required to fill out forms at the airport but appeared to have limited access to proper stationery. He expressed surprise at seeing a pen refill secured with a rope and remarked that he had to leave behind his own pen so that other passengers could use it. The content creator argued that while the issue might seem minor, such details contribute significantly to a visitor’s overall perception of a country.

Sharing the video online, Samal stressed that the matter was about more than just a pen. He said airports often serve as a traveller’s first impression of a nation and that attention to basic facilities reflects standards of service, hospitality and professionalism. His comments resonated with many social media users, helping the clip accumulate more than 2.5 lakh views and generating hundreds of reactions across platforms.

Following the video's popularity, Mumbai Airport responded publicly on X, acknowledging the feedback. The airport stated that the item shown in the video had been removed and that corrective measures had been implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. Authorities thanked the content creator for highlighting the issue and said such feedback helps maintain high standards of service and presentation for passengers.

The incident triggered a divided response online. Some users argued that the airport should ensure basic amenities such as pens are readily available, particularly at an international gateway handling millions of passengers each year. Others suggested that infrastructure alone is not enough and that public behaviour and maintenance practices also play a role in determining how such facilities are managed.

A number of commenters defended the airport, noting that pens are commonly secured in public spaces around the world to prevent them from being misplaced or accidentally taken away. Some users cited experiences in countries such as Australia, where travellers are often expected to carry their own pens when completing customs or immigration forms. While opinions differed, the episode highlighted how seemingly small details can spark broader conversations about public services, traveller experience and a country’s international image.
