Romania Creates 5-Km-Long Table, Sets Guinness World Record In Massive Fundraiser

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Romania’s capital on Saturday for a record-breaking event featuring a 5,055-metre (3.1-mile) table, with organisers using the gathering to raise funds for what they said would become the country’s first paediatric psychiatry hospital. The massive table, stretching through central Bucharest, brought together communities and participants for an event that combined a Guinness World Records attempt with a fundraising campaign. The “Uniting Table” was laid out along Unirii Boulevard and extended towards Constitution Square, in front of Bucharest’s imposing Palace of Parliament, a landmark from Romania’s communist era.

Participants sat along the length of the table as organisers sought to create a large public gathering around the fundraising initiative. The event was organised by the Romania-based Bloom The World Association, which received official recognition from Guinness World Records following the attempt. Guinness World Records awarded the organisers a certificate for the “longest table made from recycled materials.” The use of recycled materials was a central feature of the record-breaking installation, allowing the organisers to combine the environmental aspect of the project with its broader social purpose.

The scale of the structure also transformed several prominent areas of the Romanian capital into the setting for a large community gathering. According to organisers, around 20,000 people took part in the event, gathering at the many tables that collectively formed the record-breaking installation. Several sections were decorated with flowers, while participants also brought snacks and other items to make the gathering resemble a large communal meal. The event created a festive atmosphere as people joined the record attempt while supporting the fundraising effort connected to the proposed hospital.

The gathering was also attended by Joanne Brent, a senior adjudicator and official on-screen judge for Guinness World Records. Speaking on stage during the Bucharest event, Brent said the achievement demonstrated that the record-breaking effort had been put to good use. Her remarks highlighted the charitable purpose behind the gathering, with organisers seeking to channel the attention generated by the Guinness recognition towards their campaign for a paediatric psychiatry hospital.

The event brought together record-setting, community participation and fundraising in a single initiative, with the organisers using the unusual scale of the table to draw public attention to their cause. Stretching more than five kilometres through Bucharest, the “Uniting Table” became a prominent public display while also providing a platform for the campaign. The organisers said the funds raised would contribute towards establishing Romania’s first paediatric psychiatry hospital, giving the Guinness World Records achievement a wider social objective beyond the record itself.
