Rohtak Police Suicide: CM Saini Meets ASI's Family, Promises Fair Probe into Corruption Claims
Sandeep's relatives demanded the immediate arrest of Amneet Puran Kumar, the IAS officer wife of the deceased IG
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini made a high-profile visit to the bereaved family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar on Wednesday, extending condolences and vowing swift justice following the officer's shocking suicide. The tragedy, unfolding in Rohtak district, has plunged the state administration into crisis, linking directly to allegations against a deceased senior IPS officer.
Kumar, a dedicated cyber cell officer in Rohtak, was found dead on Tuesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a relative's makeshift room in a field along Ladhot-Dhamar road. His body was later moved to a family member's home in Ladhot village. In the hours before his death, the ASI left behind a chilling six-minute video and a "final note," accusing the late Inspector General (IG) Y Puran Kumar of widespread corruption. He claimed Puran Kumar, who had taken his own life on October 7 in Chandigarh, did so to evade "family humiliation" over these scandals.
Accompanied by Ministers Mahipal Dhanda and Krishan Lal Panwar, along with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manish Grover, CM Saini arrived at Ladhot village to console the family. An official statement highlighted Saini's assurance: "Appropriate action will be taken." Sandeep's relatives demanded the immediate arrest of Amneet Puran Kumar, the IAS officer wife of the deceased IG, accusing her of involvement and refusing to cremate the body until she's detained. Tension gripped Rohtak as the family bypassed police protocols, shifting the body to their village home.

The ASI's note and video invoked revolutionary icons like Bhagat Singh, declaring that sacrifices on the "path of truth" would awaken the nation. He praised former Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarniya as an "honest officer" who had confronted Puran Kumar. Kumar's death followed closely after key administrative shake-ups: the Haryana government placed Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur on leave late Monday, handing additional charge to 1992-batch officer O P Singh, while transferring SP Bijarniya earlier.
Puran Kumar's own suicide note had named eight officials, including Kapur and Bijarniya, alleging "blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation, and atrocities." The 52-year-old 2001-batch IPS officer, recently posted as IG at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak's Sunaria, was embroiled in a bribery scandal involving a liquor contractor. The contractor accused head constable Sushil Kumar, purportedly Puran Kumar's aide, of demanding Rs 2.5 lakh on the IG's behalf. ASI Sandeep Kumar had reportedly assisted in Sushil Kumar's arrest, adding fuel to the intrigue.
Rohtak's current SP, SS Bhoria, described the deceased ASI to reporters as "a very hardworking and honest person," but deferred comments on the video pending forensics. "It's difficult to say anything at this stage; the investigation is ongoing," Bhoria said.
The Chandigarh Police has formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe Puran Kumar's death, known for his advocacy on officers' rights, seniority, and related issues. As demands for transparency grow, with relatives urging a deep dive into both suicides, the Haryana government faces mounting pressure to unravel this web of allegations threatening the police force's integrity. This double tragedy underscores deeper systemic issues, leaving families and the public awaiting accountability.
