RN Ravi Takes Charge as West Bengal Governor Ahead of High-Stakes Assembly Elections
RN Ravi formally assumes charge as West Bengal Governor ahead of assembly election announcements.
R. N. Ravi was sworn in as the new governor of West Bengal on Thursday during a brief ceremony held at Lok Bhawan in Kolkata. The oath was administered by Justice Sujoy Paul, Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The event lasted around 15 minutes and was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, senior officials, and members of the governor’s family.
Following the oath-taking ceremony, Ravi exchanged greetings with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other attendees present at the event. The swearing-in took place at Lok Bhawan, the official residence of the governor, which is historically known as the Governor’s House. The ceremony marked the formal beginning of Ravi’s tenure as the constitutional head of the state.
Ravi assumed office just days before the expected announcement of the schedule for the upcoming state assembly elections. His appointment comes at a politically significant time in West Bengal, where preparations for the electoral process are underway. The presence of key political and judicial figures at the ceremony underscored the formal importance of the transition in the state’s gubernatorial leadership.
A 1976-batch officer of the Indian Police Service from the Kerala cadre, Ravi previously served in several senior positions within India’s security establishment. Before entering gubernatorial roles, he held the post of special director at the Intelligence Bureau. He has also served as governor of Nagaland and briefly held additional charge of Meghalaya before later being appointed governor of Tamil Nadu.
