RMC Chennai Predicts Heavy Rainfall And Thunderstorms Across Tamil Nadu

Monsoon advance triggers heavy rain and thunderstorms across Tamil Nadu.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai on Friday issued a forecast warning of widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across several parts of Tamil Nadu as the southwest monsoon continues its steady advance over southern India. The weather system is expected to remain active till June 9, bringing changing weather conditions across both coastal and interior districts of the state.

According to the RMC, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over coastal Karnataka and adjoining regions at an altitude of 3.1 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level. This system, combined with the advancing southwest monsoon, has led to further progression over parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as large sections of the Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists said these combined factors are responsible for the increased rainfall activity in the region.

Under its influence, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Saturday. The weather department has also predicted heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph in hilly regions of Coimbatore district, as well as in the Nilgiris, Theni and Dindigul districts. Authorities have cautioned residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert to possible disruptions.

Similar weather conditions are expected in several other districts, including Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruppur, Madurai and Virudhunagar. These regions are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Officials said the changing weather pattern is typical during the onset phase of the southwest monsoon, which often brings uneven but intense rainfall activity.

For June 7, the RMC has forecast continued light to moderate rain with thunderstorms across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Heavy rainfall is likely in the Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni and Kanyakumari districts, along with hilly areas of Coimbatore. Chennai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies, with chances of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some parts of the city. The maximum temperature is likely to remain between 38°C and 39°C, while the minimum temperature may range between 29°C and 30°C.

The weather department has also issued an advisory for fishermen, warning of strong winds over the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin Sea from Saturday to June 9. Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph and gust up to 60 kmph in some areas, making sea conditions rough. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea during this period and to exercise extreme caution due to potentially hazardous maritime conditions.
