RG Kar Case: Psychologist’s Statements Set to Offer CBI Crucial Leads
A consultant psychologist’s revelations about the mental state of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim could provide the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with vital clues.
A consultant psychologist’s revelations about the mental state of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim could provide the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with vital clues in its ongoing probe.
The psychologist, who counselled the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor roughly a month before her brutal death on August 9, 2024, disclosed that she was under “acute mental stress” due to excessive work hours and was aware of corruption within the hospital, according to statements reported by PTI on Tuesday, March 25.
The victim, found raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had sought professional help, hinting at deeper systemic issues that may have contributed to her vulnerability. “She was stressed due to long working hours and had knowledge about hospital corruption,” the psychologist told PTI.
These insights could steer the CBI toward exploring whether her distress or insider knowledge played a role in the events leading to her death.
The CBI, which took over the case from Kolkata Police on August 13 following a Calcutta High Court order, has already charged civic volunteer Sanjay Roy with the crime, filing a chargesheet on October 7, 2024.
However, the agency continues investigating potential evidence tampering by ex-principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station’s former SHO Abhijit Mondal, arrested in September 2024. The psychologist’s testimony, emerging over seven months after the incident, might illuminate new angles—possibly linking workplace pressures or corruption to the motive or cover-up. As the CBI prepares a supplementary chargesheet, these statements could prove pivotal in unraveling the full scope of this haunting case.
