IIT Bombay’s revolutionary solar cells, with 29.8% efficiency, set to transform energy with private sector boost!

India is poised to redefine the global solar energy landscape as the government plans to partner with private firms to commercially produce cutting-edge Silicon-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells developed at IIT Bombay. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi hailed the innovation as a “game-changer” during his visit to the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) at IIT Bombay, predicting a bright future for India’s solar ambitions.

Unprecedented Efficiency

Developed by IIT Bombay-incubated startup Advanced Renewable Tandem-Photovoltaics India (ART-PV India), these 2-Terminal Monolithic Silicon/CdTe-Perovskite tandem solar cells boast an impressive conversion efficiency of 29.8%, with potential to exceed 30%. This far surpasses conventional solar panels, positioning India as a leader in next-generation photovoltaics. “This is a national milestone and one of India’s highest-performing solar technologies,” Joshi told reporters, emphasizing the need for commercial production.

Government and Private Sector Push

Backed by over ₹200 crore from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) since 2010, NCPRE has been a cornerstone of India’s 100 GW solar mission. Now, the government is crafting policies to involve private companies in scaling up production of these low-cost, high-efficiency cells. “This isn’t just a lab breakthrough—it’s a blueprint for clean, scalable, and Aatmanirbhar energy,” Joshi said, highlighting the potential to make solar energy more affordable and accessible.

Leading the Global Charge

The minister underscored India’s role in shaping the future of renewable energy, not just adopting it. With advancements in perovskite solar cells, inverter technology, green hydrogen, and energy storage, India is gaining a competitive edge. Joshi urged the IIT Bombay-ART PV team to demonstrate that these cells are not only scalable but also profitable, paving the way for widespread adoption. As India drives down solar energy costs, this innovation could cement its position as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions.
