Rekha Gupta Approves Inclusion Of Transgender Passengers In Delhi’s Free Bus Travel Scheme

Delhi CM approves free bus travel for transgender passengers under Pink Saheli Smart Card scheme.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved a landmark proposal to provide free bus travel for transgender passengers on all routes operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and buses run by the city’s transport department, officials announced on Monday. The initiative aims to promote social inclusion and ensure safe, convenient travel for transgender residents of the national capital.

Under the new scheme, eligible transgender individuals will be able to avail themselves of free travel on DTC and cluster buses, following the same framework as the existing free travel facility extended to women passengers. The policy will be implemented using the same mechanisms already in place for women, ensuring a seamless rollout.

“The decision aims to ensure that members of the transgender community can travel safely and conveniently across the city without financial barriers,” the Chief Minister said in an official statement, highlighting the government’s focus on dignity, equity, and equal access to public services.

Transgender passengers will also be able to register for the ‘Pink Saheli Smart Card’, the personalized card initially launched for women and girls aged above 12 years. The card will carry the holder’s name and photograph and is designed to enable free travel within the DTC and cluster bus network. Additionally, it is top-up enabled, allowing use across other transit systems in the city.

This decision follows previous efforts by the Delhi government to enhance inclusive urban mobility. The Pink Saheli Smart Card has already facilitated convenient and cost-free travel for women and girls, and its extension to transgender residents marks a further step toward social equity.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that her administration remains committed to building a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate Delhi, where every citizen can access public services and opportunities with dignity. The government said the new initiative will strengthen social justice and promote safe and barrier-free urban transport for all.
