Red Fort Attack Forces Haryana to Accelerate Creation of 500-Commando ATS

Haryana fast-tracks elite ATS after deadly blast exposes terror cells.

The devastating November 10 bomb blast at Delhi’s Red Fort that claimed 15 lives and the subsequent unmasking of a sophisticated “white-collar terror module” operating from Faridabad have compelled the Haryana Police to urgently revive and accelerate long-delayed plans for a dedicated Anti-Terrorist Squad targeting Islamic extremist networks and Khalistani separatist elements.

The specialised ATS will focus primarily on the 14 Haryana districts within the National Capital Region, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonepat, and Jhajjar—areas repeatedly identified as high-risk corridors in national security assessments. Authorities have confirmed that the earlier dormant proposal has now been placed on priority track, with rapid groundwork underway to establish the unit within months.

Structured along the lines of elite counter-terror formations in other states, the Haryana ATS will integrate three core wings: intelligence gathering, complex investigation, and rapid-response field operations. Officials emphasised that the squad will concentrate on emerging threats from Islamic radical groups, Khalistani modules, and residual left-wing extremist nodes, marking a decisive shift from reactive policing to proactive, intelligence-driven disruption.

A force of 500 specially trained commandos equipped with advanced weaponry and supported by cutting-edge digital surveillance tools will form the operational backbone. Every police station in the NCR districts will appoint a dedicated security agent for daily terror-related intelligence collection, while the headquarters—likely to be located in Panchkula or Gurugram—will ensure seamless coordination with central agencies and neighbouring state ATS units in Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Haryana DGP O P Singh declared that the ATS represents a generational upgrade in the state’s internal security architecture, stating the objective is “early neutralisation of threats through layered intelligence, swift investigation, and precise operations,” and affirming that Haryana will no longer remain a soft target for terrorist networks seeking to exploit its strategic proximity to the national capital.
