Red Alert Prompts School Closures Across Three Odisha Districts Amid Heavy Rain

Heavy rain forces Odisha school closures

Schools and colleges in three northern Odisha districts will remain closed on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Educational institutions in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Baleshwar have been ordered to remain shut amid forecasts of intense rain, while more than five lakh people are already dealing with flood-related difficulties caused by persistent rainfall across the state. The closure will cover both government and private educational institutions in the affected districts. The Baleshwar district administration confirmed that schools and colleges would remain closed as a precautionary measure in view of the weather warning.

Authorities are monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall could worsen flooding, disrupt transportation and create difficulties for students, teachers and other residents. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha from August 16 to 18, with rainfall expected to intensify on Monday before gradually easing on Tuesday. The weather warning comes as several areas continue to experience the effects of sustained rainfall, increasing the risk of further waterlogging and flooding. Authorities have been advised to remain prepared as the latest weather system could bring another spell of intense precipitation.

The weather system responsible for the latest spell of rain is associated with a fresh low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions. According to the IMD, the system is expected to move northwestwards and become more marked during the next 24 hours. Its development is likely to influence rainfall activity over Odisha and neighbouring areas, particularly during the period when the state is already experiencing the effects of earlier rains. The IMD has also forecast squally weather over parts of the Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha coast through August 18.

Wind speeds are expected to reach between 40 and 60 kmph in the affected areas. The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds could create additional challenges for coastal communities, fishermen and transport operations, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance. The latest warning comes as the state continues to cope with widespread flooding. More than five lakh people have been affected by flood conditions linked to incessant rainfall, increasing the importance of precautionary measures in districts expected to receive another round of heavy precipitation.

Closing educational institutions is among the steps authorities can take to reduce public movement and limit exposure to potentially hazardous weather conditions. The decision to suspend classes also allows district administrations to focus on emergency preparedness and response while monitoring vulnerable areas. Local authorities are expected to keep track of water levels, road conditions and the status of essential services as the rainfall intensifies. Residents in areas prone to flooding are being urged to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local administrations.

The IMD’s red alert signals the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, with precipitation of around 20 cm forecast in the affected areas. With the heaviest spell expected on Monday, authorities have taken precautionary steps before conditions potentially deteriorate. The weather is forecast to ease on Tuesday, but officials will continue to assess the situation based on rainfall and flood conditions. For now, the closure of schools and colleges in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Baleshwar reflects the seriousness of the weather warning. With heavy rainfall forecast to continue and flood conditions already affecting large numbers of people, authorities are maintaining close watch on the situation as Odisha prepares for another intense spell of monsoon weather.
