Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan Appeals For Order And Decorum

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on Monday urged members of the Upper House to maintain dignity, discipline and decorum while conducting parliamentary proceedings during the Monsoon Session. Addressing members at the beginning of the session, he said disagreements are an essential part of democracy but must be expressed in a manner that protects the respect and sanctity of the House.

Radhakrishnan called upon lawmakers from all sides to focus on meaningful discussions and ensure that disruptions do not affect the functioning of Parliament. He said the session carries an important legislative and deliberative agenda and urged members to use the available time effectively to discuss issues of national importance. He emphasised that every disruption reduces the opportunity to debate matters concerning the country and citizens.

The Chairman said the Rajya Sabha has a long-standing tradition of constructive debate and expressed confidence that members would uphold this legacy. He noted that the session includes 19 sittings and said it was the collective responsibility of all members to make productive use of the parliamentary schedule by engaging in discussions and decision-making.

Radhakrishnan also highlighted new technological facilities introduced during the session. He said the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has launched live artificial intelligence-based simultaneous interpretation of proceedings in nine languages through multimedia devices installed at members’ seats. He added that the facility would gradually be expanded to cover all 22 scheduled languages and requested members to provide feedback to improve the service.

The first day of the 271st session of the Rajya Sabha also saw the Chairman administering the oath of office and secrecy to several newly elected members. The newly inducted representatives came from different political parties following the recent biennial elections held for the Upper House.

Among those who took the oath were Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Sushmita Dev, along with Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Prakash Chik Baraik from West Bengal. Mahesh Kevat from Madhya Pradesh, Dr Mukeshbhai J. Rathwa from Gujarat and Dr Satish Poonia from Rajasthan were also administered the oath by the Rajya Sabha Chairman.
