Rajnath Singh Says India’s Defence Production Reaches Rs 1.5 Lakh Crore
Defence Minister highlights strong growth in India’s domestic defence manufacturing sector over a decade.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has stated that India’s domestic defence production has reached approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore over the past decade, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push toward self-reliance in military manufacturing. The remarks were made in the context of government updates highlighting sustained growth in indigenous defence capabilities and industrial expansion.
According to Singh, the value of domestic defence production has risen sharply from around ₹46,000 crore in 2014 to over ₹1.5 lakh crore in the current period. This growth reflects what officials describe as a steady transformation of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, driven by policy reforms, increased private sector participation, and a strong emphasis on indigenisation under initiatives such as “Make in India.”
The Defence Minister attributed the expansion to structural changes in procurement procedures, improved ease of doing business in the sector, and deeper collaboration between public sector undertakings and private manufacturers. Government-led efforts to promote technology transfer, domestic production of components, and research and development have also contributed to the sector’s growth trajectory.

Alongside production growth, India’s defence exports have also increased substantially in recent years, reflecting a broader push to position the country as a global supplier of military equipment. Officials have previously reported that exports have crossed ₹23,000 crore, with Indian-made defence systems now reaching multiple countries across different regions.
Industry data cited in government and media reports indicates that public sector enterprises continue to account for the majority share of production, although the private sector’s contribution has steadily increased over time. Analysts note that this shift reflects a gradual diversification of India’s defence industrial base and a stronger role for private players in strategic manufacturing.
The statement underscores India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic autonomy in defence production, with policymakers continuing to emphasise self-reliance, modernisation, and expansion of domestic capabilities as central pillars of national security planning.
