Rajnath Singh attends Srinagar tribute events for Kargil heroes.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Srinagar on Saturday to proceed to Drass and participate in the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations. The Defence Minister was scheduled to travel to the Kargil War Memorial by helicopter, but adverse weather conditions and poor flying conditions forced a change in plans. He subsequently continued his journey to Drass by road to attend the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas events.

Upon his arrival at Srinagar International Airport, Rajnath Singh was received by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha along with senior civil and security officials. The Defence Minister was scheduled to reach Drass through an aerial route; however, the helicopter sortie could not be conducted due to unfavourable weather conditions in the region. Following the cancellation, security arrangements were strengthened for his road journey towards the memorial site.

The two-day Kargil Vijay Diwas programme began on Saturday at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, where the nation is paying tribute to soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. The annual commemorative event is attended by senior military officers, war veterans, families of martyrs, government representatives and civil dignitaries to honour the courage and valour of the armed forces.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to mark India's victory in the Kargil conflict against Pakistan in 1999. The day holds special significance in the country's military history as it remembers the efforts of Indian soldiers who successfully recaptured strategic mountain positions in the Kargil region of Ladakh after intense battles under challenging conditions.

The Kargil War began after Indian forces detected the infiltration and occupation of strategic positions by Pakistani troops and armed personnel in the Kargil sector. Initially, Pakistan denied direct involvement and attributed the conflict to Kashmiri militants. However, later evidence, including documents recovered from casualties, statements from prisoners of war and subsequent remarks by Pakistani leaders and military officials, indicated the involvement of Pakistani forces.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations serve as a reminder of the bravery, determination and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought during the conflict. The commemorations at Drass provide an opportunity for the nation to pay respect to the fallen heroes and reaffirm its commitment to remembering their contribution to India's security and sovereignty.
