Rajnath Singh Appeals For Calm Amid US-Iran Tensions And Rising Fuel Concerns

Rajnath Singh urges calm amid US-Iran tensions, says Centre taking steps to ensure supply stability.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday urged citizens to remain calm and avoid panic amid concerns over rising fuel prices and supply chain disruptions linked to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. In a post on social media platform X, Singh said the Centre is taking “concrete steps” to ensure stability and prevent shortages in essential supplies across the country.

The statement comes in the backdrop of growing global uncertainty triggered by heightened tensions in West Asia, which have raised fears of volatility in energy markets and potential disruptions to trade routes. Singh emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working to safeguard the country’s economic and energy security interests.

Reiterating the Centre’s position, the Defence Minister appealed to the public not to engage in panic buying or unnecessary stockpiling. He said such behaviour could worsen supply pressures and create artificial shortages. Instead, he urged citizens to trust the government’s ongoing efforts to manage the situation and maintain normal supply chains.

Singh also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier appeal to citizens, in which the Prime Minister had reportedly suggested a set of precautionary measures to help the country navigate the impact of global tensions. These included encouraging work-from-home arrangements where possible, reducing non-essential foreign travel, and avoiding discretionary purchases such as gold, with the broader aim of conserving foreign exchange reserves and stabilising fuel consumption.

According to Singh, the government’s response strategy is focused on ensuring uninterrupted availability of fuel and essential commodities despite global market fluctuations. He noted that multiple ministries are coordinating efforts to strengthen supply chain resilience and prevent any disruption to domestic markets.

The Centre’s reassurances come at a time when international crude oil prices and shipping costs have shown increased volatility. Officials maintain that India is better positioned than many economies due to diversified energy sourcing and strategic reserves. Singh concluded by reiterating that there is no cause for alarm and that the government will continue to take proactive measures to protect citizens from external economic shocks.
