Rajasthan To Introduce ‘Prasav Sakhi’ System For High-Risk Pregnancy Monitoring
Rajasthan launches support system for high-risk pregnancy care.
The Rajasthan government has announced the launch of the ‘Prasav Sakhi’ (Birthing Companion) system in government hospitals to provide dedicated assistance and coordinated healthcare support to women facing high-risk pregnancies. The initiative aims to improve maternal and child healthcare services and reduce complications linked to pregnancy and post-delivery care.
Introduced under the directions of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the programme focuses on making maternity services more patient-friendly, responsive and respectful. The system will be implemented in phases across medical college-affiliated hospitals, district hospitals and First Referral Units (FRUs) that handle a large number of deliveries.
Under the new arrangement, every high-risk pregnant woman admitted to selected government hospitals will be assigned a trained ‘Prasav Sakhi’. These companions will include nursing staff members, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) or other designated female health workers who will provide support throughout the patient’s hospital stay.

Prasav Sakhis will be easily identified through pink aprons and will assist women from admission and registration to delivery, postnatal care and discharge. Their responsibilities will include helping patients complete registration procedures, coordinating diagnostic tests, arranging consultations, supporting referrals to specialists and ensuring that medical services are provided without unnecessary delays.
Principal Secretary of the Medical and Health Department, Gayatri Rathore, said dedicated 24x7 Maternal and Child Health Help Desks will be established at all designated hospitals. These desks will act as the first point of contact for pregnant women and their families, providing information about available services, medical procedures and treatment processes.
The Rajasthan government also plans to integrate the 104 Janani Express ambulance service, Maternal and Child Health Help Desks and the Prasav Sakhi system into a unified healthcare network. Officials said the coordinated system will prioritise transportation, admission and treatment for high-risk pregnant women, ensuring continuous support from their homes to healthcare facilities and throughout their medical care journey.
