Rajasthan Farmer's Buried Rs 5 Lakh Destroyed by Termites After A Year

A farmer’s attempt to protect Rs 5 lakh in family savings ended in a devastating loss after termites severely damaged the currency he had buried in his agricultural field. The incident occurred in Nevai village of Balotra district, where farmer Mangilal Meghwal lives with his family in a makeshift dwelling on nearly 10 bighas of agricultural land.

Mangilal had reportedly sold a plot in Pachpadra about a year earlier and received Rs 5 lakh from the transaction. He planned to use the money to construct a permanent room on his agricultural property. Worried that keeping such a large amount of cash at home could expose it to theft or unnecessary spending, he decided to hide it underground instead of depositing it in a bank.

The farmer placed the Rs 500 notes inside a polythene bag, dug a pit somewhere in the field and buried the entire amount. However, as time passed, he reportedly forgot the exact location of the hiding place. When he later needed the money, he searched the field but could not identify where the bag had been concealed beneath the soil.

After several unsuccessful attempts to find the cash, Mangilal finally told his wife and sons what he had done. His family initially struggled to believe that such a large amount had been buried in the field without their knowledge. They nevertheless joined the search, digging at several possible locations across the property, but their efforts also failed to uncover the missing savings.

About a year after the money was buried, rainfall prompted the family to begin preparing the agricultural land for sowing. During this work, the polythene bag reportedly emerged from the ground one night but was not immediately noticed in the darkness. The following morning, Mangilal’s wife and son spotted it while repairing the fencing around the field and opened it, expecting to recover the missing cash.

Instead, they discovered that termites had badly damaged the Rs 500 notes, reducing much of the currency to torn pieces. The family collected the remains and approached a State Bank of India branch in Pachpadra, which reportedly declined to accept them because of their condition. They then visited SBI’s main branch in Balotra but were reportedly turned away again, leaving them without the savings intended to improve their living conditions.
