Rajasthan CM orders urgent repairs for dilapidated government buildings and schools after deadly Jhalawar collapse.
In response to a tragic school building collapse in Jhalawar district that claimed seven lives, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has mandated immediate repairs for dilapidated government buildings, schools, and Anganwadi centres across the state. The directive, announced on Saturday, aims to bolster public infrastructure and prevent future tragedies.
To facilitate swift action, Sharma increased the funding allocation for repair works under the Dang, Magra, and Mewat Regional Development Schemes from 15% to 20%. Additionally, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) can now allocate up to 20% of their annual MLA Local Area Development Scheme funds for the maintenance of government schools, institutions, and Anganwadi centres. The Chief Minister urged legislators to prioritize the upkeep of aging school buildings, stating, “Strengthening these structures is essential to avoid any untoward incidents in the future.”
The 2024-25 state budget allocates Rs 375 crore for constructing and repairing school buildings lacking adequate infrastructure, with an additional Rs 3 crore designated per assembly constituency for repair works. Following a high-level meeting on Friday, Sharma instructed district collectors and department officials to conduct immediate inspections of all government facilities, including schools and hospitals, and commence necessary repairs. A committee of experts has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within five days to guide the state’s infrastructure overhaul.
