Railways To Introduce Paperless App System, Expand Powers of Station Masters
Railways introduces digital systems and boosts station master responsibilities.
The Indian Railways is exploring a major operational upgrade that includes introducing mobile app-based, paperless working systems for station masters and developing an integrated Station Management System (SMS) aimed at improving coordination across departments and enabling faster resolution of passenger-related issues at stations. The proposals were reviewed by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a recent meeting with senior railway officials.
The review focused on strengthening the role of station masters, who are central to train operations and station management. Officials discussed proposals to enhance their administrative and operational authority, recognising the increasing complexity of railway operations, especially in high-traffic and multi-track sections. The initiative also includes improving career progression pathways and providing better access to higher levels of management within the organisation.
As part of the proposed reforms, the Railways is working on a mobile app-based system to enable paperless functioning at stations. The integrated Station Management System is expected to streamline communication between different railway departments, improve workflow efficiency, and allow quicker resolution of passenger grievances. Officials said the system is designed to reduce delays caused by manual processes and improve real-time decision-making at station level.

The Railways also reviewed the growing operational demands in busy sections of the network, particularly in multi-track and high-density routes where train movement has increased significantly. In these areas, the need for additional station masters was discussed to ensure smooth handling of operations, improved safety management, and better coordination across departments.
Officials emphasised the importance of filling vacancies in the station master cadre on a priority basis, noting that rising traffic levels and operational complexity have placed additional workload on existing staff. The discussion highlighted the need to strengthen frontline railway operations to maintain efficiency and service reliability across the network.
In addition to administrative and staffing reforms, the Railway Ministry underscored the importance of modern training and skill development. Officials discussed upgrading training methods using virtual reality tools, simulators and other advanced technologies to better prepare station masters for handling complex operational scenarios and emergency situations. The initiative is intended to enhance decision-making capabilities and improve overall operational readiness across the railway system.
