Railways glow in tricolour for Independence Day
Indian Railways, under Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s government, transformed iconic infrastructure across the nation into a vibrant display of patriotism, illuminating landmarks like the Chenab Bridge, Anji Bridge, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in the tricolour to mark India’s 79th Independence Day. The dazzling spectacle not only amplified national pride but also served as a poignant tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters who secured India’s independence, as railway officials emphasized the celebrations’ role in uniting citizens under the national flag.
The Railway Ministry, led by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, orchestrated a nationwide effort, adorning major stations, offices, and residential colonies with tricolour flags and lighting. “Iconic railway bridges and stations proudly display the national flag, enhancing the patriotic spirit,” the Ministry stated in a press release. Key sites, including Bengaluru’s Divisional Railway Manager office, South Eastern Railway’s headquarters, and stations like Sealdah, Lucknow, and Vizianagaram, glowed in saffron, white, and green, creating a festive atmosphere.
The Jammu Rail Division, part of Northern Railway, took center stage by illuminating the world’s highest Chenab Bridge and India’s first cable-stayed Anji Bridge, evoking awe and pride. Vaishnaw shared a striking image of the Chenab Bridge on X, captioning it, “Shining in the tricolour, #ChenabBridge symbolizes the heights of free India. Jai Hind!” The East Coast Railway Zone showcased Vizianagaram Station’s illumination on social media, declaring, “East Coast Railway joins the national celebration, with Vizianagaram Station shining bright!”

The celebrations aligned with the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, championed by PM Modi, encouraging every household and institution to hoist the national flag. “All railway stations and offices reflect unity and respect for the tricolour,” said Vivek Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Jammu Division. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, added, “The campaign fosters collective national pride, inspiring citizens to join Independence Day festivities wholeheartedly.”
On the eve of Independence Day, Railway Board Chairman & CEO Satish Kumar led a ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ event at Rail Bhawan, distributing flags among staff. The Ministry noted “mass participation” by railway employees, underscoring their commitment to the campaign. Additionally, the All India Railwaymen’s Federation marked the occasion with a Blood Donation Camp, coinciding with the 75th birthday of its General Secretary, Shiva Gopal Mishra. Northern Railway General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma inaugurated the camp, blending patriotism with social service.
Public reactions on X praised the railways’ efforts, with users like Priya Sharma posting, “PM Modi’s vision shines through as our railways unite India in tricolour glory!” Some opposition voices, including CPI(M) supporters, critiqued the government’s focus on symbolism amid economic challenges, but the overwhelming sentiment celebrated the visual tribute. The initiative, backed by PM Modi’s push for national unity, reinforced Indian Railways’ role as a cultural and economic lifeline, illuminating the nation’s pride on its 79th Independence Day.
