Railway Staffer Raises Alarm, Locals Rescue 25-Year-Old From Vaitarna River

Alert guard raises alarm; locals rescue man from Vaitarna river.

An alert railway staffer’s swift response helped save the life of a 25-year-old man who fell from a moving suburban train into the Vaitarna river on the outskirts of Mumbai. The dramatic rescue, which took place on Tuesday night, has since gone viral on social media.

The man, identified as Uday Mangesh Wangad, was travelling from Boisar to Borivali on a local train when the incident occurred. According to officials, Wangad was standing near the door of the train as it crossed a bridge over the Vaitarna river. He reportedly lost his balance and fell into the water below.

Railway track maintenance guard Ramesh Singh, who was on duty in the area, witnessed the fall. Speaking to PTI, Singh said he immediately raised an alarm and alerted nearby villagers as well as his senior officials. His prompt action set in motion a quick rescue effort.

Two local residents rushed to the river, launched a boat and navigated through the currents to reach Wangad. He was found clinging to a metal rod protruding from one of the bridge pillars, managing to stay above water despite the fall. The rescuers pulled him onto the boat and brought him safely back to shore.

Singh and other railway personnel subsequently informed Wangad’s family about the incident. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received first aid for minor scratches and shock. Doctors confirmed that he did not suffer any serious injuries.

“The man was in shock. He was given first aid at a local hospital for scratches. I just did my duty. Ensuring the rescue of a man in distress was satisfying,” Singh said. In another video that surfaced online, Wangad’s mother expressed her gratitude to those involved in the rescue. “They are angels who gave my son a second life,” she said.

Railway officials reiterated the importance of passenger safety, urging commuters not to stand near train doors while trains are in motion. The incident highlights both the risks associated with overcrowded suburban trains and the crucial role played by vigilant staff and local residents in emergency situations.
