Rahul Gandhi Shows Naravane Memoir, Accuses PM of Passing Buck on China Conflict

Rahul Gandhi accuses PM Modi of evading responsibility in 2020 China standoff, citing Naravane's unreleased memoir.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday publicly displayed the unreleased memoir of former Army Chief General MM Naravane, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi avoided taking responsibility during the 2020 India-China border conflict. Speaking at the Parliament House complex, Gandhi said the book, though denied by the government, clearly documents critical decisions during the Ladakh standoff.

Gandhi cited passages from the memoir indicating that General Naravane had repeatedly sought guidance from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other officials when Chinese forces entered Indian territory. According to Gandhi, the Army chief was initially left without a response, and only later received a message from the Prime Minister saying, “jo uchit samjho woh karo” — suggesting he was allowed to act independently while the political leadership avoided direct responsibility.

The Congress leader emphasized that Naravane’s memoir depicts a sense of isolation felt by the Army chief during the crisis. “The Army Chief was abandoned by the entire establishment at a critical moment,” Gandhi said, asserting that young people in India should see that the memoir exists despite government claims to the contrary.

Gandhi also criticized restrictions in Parliament, claiming he was barred from quoting the memoir during debates. The opposition leader described it as unprecedented that a Leader of Opposition was not allowed to speak on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address and termed it a “blot on our democracy.”

Tensions in the Lok Sabha escalated when eight protesting MPs from the Congress and CPI(M) were suspended for the remainder of the Budget session after attempting to challenge restrictions on Gandhi’s speech. The MPs were accused of “unruly behavior,” including climbing tables and hurling papers, highlighting growing friction between the government and opposition on matters of national security.

Rahul Gandhi concluded that the country deserves answers about political accountability during the border standoff. He stated that if Prime Minister Modi attends Parliament, he intends to personally present the memoir, underscoring his demand for transparency regarding critical defence decisions.
