Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday said India would remain "stunted" unless women are able to express themselves freely and participate equally in society. In an Instagram video, Gandhi argued that women's empowerment should extend beyond representation in politics and business to include the freedom to speak, question and make choices in their homes and public spaces. He described the remarks as an extension of his response during a social media "Ask Me Anything" session a day earlier.
Gandhi said the energy of Indian women was being restricted and prevented from being fully expressed. He argued that no country could achieve its full potential if women were unable to express their views and participate freely. According to him, ensuring women have the opportunity to imagine, speak and contribute should be an important part of India's political and social development.
The Congress leader said women's empowerment should not be measured only by their presence in political institutions or success in business. He said women should also be able to express their opinions within their families, move through public spaces comfortably and question decisions with which they disagree. Gandhi linked these freedoms to the need to reduce what he described as patriarchal restrictions imposed on women.

Gandhi also described women's freedom as an important part of his political philosophy. He said the issue had faced setbacks and needed to be brought back into public discussion. He called for greater efforts to ensure that women were able to participate in conversations that affect them and pursue their aspirations without unnecessary restrictions.
His latest remarks followed a question during Thursday's interactive session about young women fighting for their right to education. Gandhi had described women as India's "strength" and "biggest asset" while expressing concern about how women are treated across different parts of society. He also referred to challenges faced by women in education and the corporate sector.
Gandhi said women should have equal space across every sphere of life and argued that they should not be restricted from participating fully in society. His comments come amid an ongoing political discussion about women's representation, education, safety and participation in public life. The Congress leader reiterated that creating greater freedom for women to speak and make choices should remain a key part of efforts to strengthen India's development.
