Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, on Wednesday paid floral tributes to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 62nd death anniversary. The homage was held at Shanti Van, the memorial dedicated to Nehru in the national capital, where party leaders gathered to mark the occasion.

Rahul Gandhi, who is Nehru’s great-grandson, paid tribute at the memorial as part of the remembrance ceremony. His presence underscored the personal and political legacy associated with Nehru’s role in shaping India’s early democratic framework. Party leaders described the occasion as a moment to reflect on Nehru’s contributions to the nation’s foundation and democratic institutions.

Mallikarjun Kharge also offered floral tributes at Shanti Van and later posted a detailed message on social media platform ‘X’. In his message, he emphasized Nehru’s vision of unity, equality, and institution-building. Kharge highlighted Nehru’s belief in secularism and inclusive development, stating that national progress and unity remain shared responsibilities beyond regional, linguistic, or religious differences.

The Goa Congress also issued a statement on social media, remembering Nehru as the architect of modern India. The party credited him with laying the foundation for democratic governance, scientific advancement, and industrial development. It noted that his leadership helped India gain global respect and establish strong institutional frameworks in the early years after independence.

Born in 1889 in Allahabad, Jawaharlal Nehru played a central role in India’s freedom struggle and later became the country’s first Prime Minister in 1947. He served until his death on May 27, 1964, after suffering a heart attack. His legacy continues to be marked annually, with tributes from political leaders across party lines and his birth anniversary observed as Children’s Day in India.
