Rahul Gandhi Demands Truth in Zubeen Garg Case with Emotional Family Tribute

Rahul Gandhi urges transparent probe into Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death amid public unrest.

Congress Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi paid an emotional tribute to Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg at his residence and samadhi in Sonapur, near Guwahati, calling for a transparent investigation into the icon’s mysterious death on September 19 while swimming in Singapore. Speaking to the media, Gandhi conveyed the Garg family’s plea for clarity, stating, “They said only one thing, we have lost our Zubeen and all we want is that the truth should be clear.” His visit underscores the statewide grief over the loss of a cultural giant, likened by Gandhi to the “honest, transparent, unshakable” Mt. Kanchenjunga.

The Assam government has intensified its probe, with the Criminal Investigation Department-Special Investigation Team (CID-SIT) arresting seven individuals, including Garg’s bandmates Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prava Mahanta, who were remanded to judicial custody on October 17 after a 14-day police custody. Other suspects include NEIF organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddhartha Sharma, cousin and DSP Sandipan Garg, and security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, all currently detained. A local court will review the bandmates’ cases again within 14 days, as investigations delve into the circumstances of Garg’s drowning.

In addition to the CID-SIT probe, the state has appointed a one-man inquiry commission, led by Gauhati High Court Justice Soumitra Saikia, to ensure a thorough examination of the case. Gandhi emphasized the government’s duty to deliver swift and transparent answers to Garg’s family and fans, noting the tragedy’s profound impact on Assam. His poignant reference to Garg as a symbol of resilience, inspired by a conversation with Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi, resonated with mourners seeking closure.
