Rahul and Sonia Gandhi Visit Wayanad for Private Engagements

Congress heavyweights Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi touched down in Kerala’s scenic Wayanad district on Friday morning for a series of private engagements, keeping their visit low-key amid speculation about its purpose. Landing at Kozhikode airport around 10 AM, the duo hopped a helicopter to Padinjarathara, touching down at the Government High School ground by 10:40 AM. They were warmly welcomed by a high-powered Congress entourage, including KPCC President Sunny Joseph, MP Shafi Parambil, MLA T Siddique, and Wayanad DCC President ND Appachan, before heading to a hotel for the day’s agenda.

While the Congress has kept mum on details, sources indicate Rahul and Sonia are slated to attend private events in the evening, steering clear of public or party programs. The visit coincides with Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s ongoing week-long stay in her constituency, where she has been actively engaging with local communities. On Friday morning, Priyanka visited the Sree Kunnathu Mahavishnu Temple in Manassery, Mukkam, Kozhikode, participating in a traditional “Tulabharam” ritual, offering plantains in a gesture of devotion. She also admired the temple’s intricately carved chariot, lauding the artisans’ craftsmanship in a moment that resonated with locals.

Priyanka’s schedule remains packed, with a meeting of coffee farmers set for the afternoon, addressing critical agricultural concerns in Wayanad’s plantation-heavy economy. An evening session focused on agriculture-related issues will follow, underscoring her hands-on approach to constituency matters. Wayanad, a lush hill district known for its coffee, tea, and spice estates, has been a Congress stronghold, with Priyanka’s frequent visits signaling the party’s commitment to its voters.

The Gandhi family’s presence, though shrouded in secrecy, has sparked curiosity in political circles, with locals and analysts speculating about potential strategic discussions or community outreach plans. Wayanad, still recovering from recent natural calamities like landslides, relies heavily on its agrarian base, making the family’s focus on farmers and local traditions significant. As the Congress navigates India’s complex political landscape, this quiet visit could hint at deeper efforts to strengthen grassroots ties in Kerala’s verdant heartland.
