Putin Calls Greenland Issue 'None Of Russia's Business' in Security Meeting

Putin distances Russia from the Greenland dispute, calling it others' matter in Security Council remarks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said that developments related to Greenland do not concern Russia, amid heightened tensions triggered by US President Donald Trump’s renewed demand to acquire the Arctic island from Denmark. His remarks come as the issue has unsettled Denmark and raised questions about unity within the NATO alliance.

Speaking during a televised meeting of Russia’s National Security Council late Wednesday night, Putin dismissed the matter as an internal issue for the countries directly involved. “What happens to Greenland is none of our business,” he said, making clear that Moscow does not intend to take a position on the dispute.

Putin went on to make historical observations while distancing Russia from the controversy. He said Denmark had historically treated Greenland as a colony and described its approach as “quite harsh, if not cruel.” However, he added that this was a separate issue and not something that Russia was concerned with at present.

Reiterating his view that the matter should be resolved without outside involvement, Putin said the situation does not affect Russia’s interests. “It certainly doesn’t concern us. I think they’ll sort it out among themselves,” he said, referring to the parties involved in the Greenland debate.

The Russian president also cited historical precedents of territorial transactions to underline his point. He recalled that Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the United States in 1917, suggesting that such arrangements have occurred before in international history.

Additionally, Putin noted that Russia itself sold Alaska to the United States in 1867 for USD 7.2 million. His comments were made as Trump’s statements on Greenland continue to draw global attention and fuel diplomatic friction among Western allies.
