Punjab's Gun Network Faces Scrutiny After Killings And Attacks On Police Ahead Of Polls

Punjab arms trail draws attention ahead polls.

With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, a series of illegal arms recoveries and targeted killings has brought renewed attention to the state's security environment. Over the past three months, Punjab Police have reported seizures ranging from pistols and an MP-9 rifle to AK-47 and AK-56 assault rifles and hand grenades. The recoveries have occurred alongside the killings of political workers and local representatives, as well as the fatal shooting of a police officer while on night patrol. Taken together, the incidents have raised questions about the networks supplying sophisticated weapons and the extent to which illegal arms could intersect with organised crime, local rivalries and election-related violence.

The scale and variety of recent seizures are notable. Police operations in July included the recovery of 12 pistols and six hand grenades in an alleged cross-border module, while another operation resulted in the seizure of 15 illegal pistols. In August, investigators reported recovering an MP-9 rifle and multiple pistols in separate cases, followed by further seizures of high-end firearms. September brought additional major recoveries, including two AK-47 rifles and 50 cartridges, 13 pistols and 23 cartridges, and 10 pistols and 20 cartridges in Faridkot. On September 30, Amritsar Rural Police recovered an AK-47 and an AK-56 along with ammunition and more than 10 kg of heroin. Four days later, another operation led to the recovery of an AK-47, a magazine, ammunition and two hand grenades, with police alleging links between the accused and foreign-based smugglers.

The arms seizures have taken place against a backdrop of violence involving politically connected individuals, although investigators have not established a political motive in every case. On July 21, AAP-linked sarpanch Satpal Singh, also known as Mintu, of Anandgarh village in Hoshiarpur was allegedly attacked before being run over by a vehicle. On August 29, AAP worker Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi was shot dead in Mamdot, Ferozepur, while another worker was injured and a vehicle linked to a local Nagar panchayat president was targeted. Police initially pointed to an old election-related rivalry. In September, AAP sarpanch Kuljit Singh Sandhu went missing and was later found dead, while SAD-linked leader Navpreet Singh was shot dead in Tarn Taran. On October 3, former Akali sarpanch Navtej Singh was killed near Ladhowal in Ludhiana. Police have examined personal, property and other local disputes in several of these cases, meaning they should not automatically be classified as political killings.

The security concern also extends directly to the police. On September 18, Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot by motorcycle-borne assailants while on night patrol near the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar. He later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators have been examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the motive and identify the attackers. The killing followed other attacks on Punjab Police personnel during 2026, including the deaths of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard personnel Ashok Kumar at a Gurdaspur border checkpost in February and ASI Joga Singh near Majitha in May. The incidents have prompted scrutiny of whether apparently separate attacks could have connections to broader criminal or cross-border networks, although investigations into individual cases remain important before drawing conclusions about a common conspiracy.

The wider concern for Punjab's security agencies is therefore not simply the number of weapons recovered, but the supply chains behind them. Police have repeatedly investigated alleged cross-border arms and narcotics networks, while officials have also highlighted the role of drones in moving consignments across the international border. Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence wing has said it has busted dozens of terror modules in recent years and recovered large quantities of firearms and explosives, underlining the continuing challenge posed by illegal weapons in the border state. Akashvani News Ahead of the 2027 elections, the intersection of illegal arms, organised crime, narcotics trafficking and local violence will remain a significant law-and-order concern. The key questions for investigators are where the sophisticated weapons are coming from, how they are reaching local operatives, who is financing the networks and whether the arms trade is increasingly being used to facilitate targeted violence.
