Punjab–Himachal Border Blockade Called Off: Talks Promised, Protesters Warn of Return

Agitation is suspended after Himachal assures formal talks within ten days on entry tax.

A blockade along the Punjab–Himachal Pradesh border was called off on Wednesday after the Himachal Pradesh administration assured protesters that formal talks would be held within 10 days. The agitation, led by farmer groups, transporters, and social organisations, had disrupted movement across key entry points for several hours before being suspended, though participants warned of renewed protests if their demands are not addressed.

The protest was spearheaded by Punjab Morcha along with farmer unions, taxi operators, and truck drivers. Demonstrations began early in the morning at Garha Morh on the Kiratpur Sahib–Manali highway and spread to nearly 32 entry points along the interstate border. Protesters staged a dharna and blocked vehicular movement, leading to long traffic snarls stretching several kilometres on both sides.

The disruption significantly affected daily commuters, transport services, and trade between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Several vehicles remained stranded for hours, highlighting the scale of the agitation and its immediate impact on movement across the region. Authorities monitored the situation closely to prevent escalation.

At the centre of the agitation is opposition to the Himachal Pradesh government’s entry tax, which protesters argue disproportionately affects residents of Punjab’s border districts. Many people frequently travel to Himachal Pradesh for work, trade, and family visits, and demonstrators have demanded a complete exemption from the tax for such individuals.

The protest comes amid heightened tensions following the state government’s recent decision to revise entry tax rates. The move had triggered widespread backlash, prompting authorities to partially roll back the revised rates. However, protesters maintain that their concerns remain unresolved.

While the assurance of talks has temporarily eased the situation, protest leaders have warned that failure to reach a satisfactory outcome could lead to a renewed and more intense agitation. The development keeps pressure on the Himachal Pradesh administration to address the issue promptly and find a lasting solution.
