Punjab Transfers DSP, Moves Three Police Personnel After Rahul Gandhi's Call

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spoke to Mohanjit Singh Sheron, who is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital in Sangrur after an alleged assault in police custody. Gandhi spoke to Sheron over the phone during a visit by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who facilitated the conversation.

The development has intensified the political controversy surrounding Sheron's alleged beating following his detention during Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's event in Sangrur. Congress has stepped up its criticism of the AAP-led Punjab government over the allegations, while Gandhi's direct conversation with the injured man has brought the matter into the national political spotlight.

The Punjab government has initiated disciplinary action against several police personnel in connection with the case. DSP Harwinder Singh has been transferred, while Inspector Partek Jindal, SI Baljit Singh and ASI Harpreet Singh have been sent to the Sangrur Police Lines with immediate effect. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has also condemned the allegations and indicated that the matter is being investigated.

The controversy began after Sheron was allegedly detained when he was around 200-230 metres from the Chief Minister's Lok Milni event, where he was reportedly holding a black flag and raising slogans against the government. Police maintained that security personnel removed him from the area for verification and claimed that eight FIRs had previously been registered against him under serious criminal sections. According to police, preventive action was subsequently initiated and Sheron was arrested at around 10:30 pm and taken to Cheema Police Station.

Police have pointed to an initial medical examination conducted before Sheron was produced before the SDM, which recorded “no fresh injury marks present on examination”. Officials also claimed that two drug tests conducted the following morning returned positive results. However, after Sheron was handed over to his family following intervention by the village panchayat, he was taken to Civil Hospital, Sangrur, where doctors recorded 10 injuries in his medico-legal report.

The differing medical findings have become a central part of the controversy. Police officials have highlighted the discrepancy between the initial examination and the subsequent medico-legal report, with the medical records and other relevant documents now placed under police headquarters' supervision for further examination. With disciplinary action underway and Gandhi directly engaging with Sheron, the incident has emerged as another major flashpoint between the ruling AAP government and the Opposition Congress in Punjab.
