Punjab Power Crisis Emerges as Major Challenge for AAP Ahead of Assembly Elections

Punjab's growing power crisis has emerged as a major political challenge for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government as the state enters the peak paddy transplantation season ahead of the next Assembly elections. With electricity demand reaching its annual high, frequent power outages in both rural and urban areas have triggered public dissatisfaction and intensified criticism from opposition parties. The disruptions have raised concerns over the state's power management at a time when uninterrupted electricity is considered critical for agriculture, industry and domestic consumers.

The paddy transplantation season is one of the most electricity-intensive periods in Punjab, where thousands of farmers depend on electric tubewells to irrigate their fields. A reliable power supply is essential for ensuring timely transplantation and protecting crops from moisture stress. However, reports of prolonged outages from several districts have fuelled resentment among cultivators, many of whom claim the disruptions are affecting irrigation schedules and increasing the risk of crop losses. Farmers have warned that continued interruptions could have a significant impact on agricultural productivity during the ongoing sowing season.

In the Majitha constituency of Amritsar district, farmers alleged that electricity supplied through the Dhadde feeder remained disrupted for nearly 36 hours during the crucial transplantation period. The prolonged outage reportedly prevented many cultivators from operating their tubewells, leaving paddy seedlings vulnerable to drying up.

Aggrieved farmers gathered outside the local electricity office, demanding the immediate restoration of power and questioning the government's preparedness to meet the increased demand during one of the busiest phases of the agricultural calendar. The incident has become emblematic of broader concerns regarding the state's electricity distribution network.

The opposition has seized upon the issue to step up its attack on the Bhagwant Mann-led government. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal accused the AAP administration of failing to ensure an adequate electricity supply for farmers, industries and households. He alleged that damaged transformers were not being replaced promptly, resulting in prolonged outages in several areas. Badal also claimed that poor management of canal water had compounded the challenges faced by farmers, leaving them increasingly dependent on electrically operated irrigation systems at a time when power supply remained inconsistent.

The power crisis has become a politically sensitive issue as Punjab prepares for its next Assembly elections, with opposition parties seeking to portray the outages as evidence of administrative shortcomings. Reliable electricity has long been a key electoral issue in the state due to its direct impact on agriculture, which remains the backbone of Punjab's economy. As demand continues to rise during the paddy season, the government's ability to restore stable electricity supply and address farmers' concerns is likely to remain under close public and political scrutiny in the weeks ahead.
