Punjab Police Issue Alert on Phishing Links Circulating as ‘Cockroach Janta Party’
Punjab Police warn of phishing scam via viral WhatsApp links.
Punjab Police have issued a cyber safety advisory after reports emerged that fraudsters are exploiting the viral popularity of the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) to circulate phishing links and target unsuspecting users, particularly young people on social media platforms. Authorities warned that the campaign is being misused to lure victims into clicking malicious links that can compromise mobile devices and financial data.
According to police sources in Ludhiana, cybercriminals are sending WhatsApp messages inviting users to “join the Cockroach Janta Party,” often accompanied by emotionally charged slogans such as calls for systemic change and promises of “big opportunities for youth.” These messages are reportedly being shared with embedded links that, once clicked, can install malware or redirect users to fraudulent websites designed to steal personal information.
The Ludhiana Police Commissionerate has issued an official advisory stating that the circulating links are part of a phishing scam and not associated with any legitimate organisation. Officials clarified that the intent behind the fraud is to gain unauthorized access to victims’ smartphones, allowing attackers to extract banking credentials, passwords, and other sensitive data.
Police further warned that compromised devices can be used for financial crimes, including unauthorized bank transfers and fraudulent loan applications in the victim’s name. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious while interacting with viral social media content and to avoid clicking on unfamiliar or unverified links under any circumstances.
As part of awareness efforts, Ludhiana Police have also released a short informational video explaining how such scams operate and how users can protect themselves. Commissioner Swapan Sharma advised citizens to immediately report any suspected cyber fraud to the national cyber helpline 1930, noting that quick action significantly improves the chances of recovering lost funds.
Meanwhile, the controversy around the “Cockroach Janta Party” continues to grow online, with its founder Abhijeet Dipke alleging that his social media accounts have faced restrictions and hacking attempts. Based in Boston, United States, Dipke has claimed that his Instagram account was compromised and that the group’s online presence has been intermittently disrupted, further adding to the digital confusion surrounding the viral movement.
