Punjab Introduces Artificial Intelligence Curriculum Across Schools From Class 1 To 12
Punjab adds AI education across school levels to prepare students.
Punjab has become the first state in India to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mainstream subject from Class I to Class XII, launching the ‘Sarbat.AI’ project to integrate AI education across schools. The initiative by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) aims to prepare students with future-ready skills and establish the state as a leader in technology-based learning.
The AI curriculum will be introduced in a phased manner across government and affiliated private schools. In the first phase, students from Classes VIII to XII will study AI through the existing Computer Science curriculum, with lessons delivered through live online classes, recorded lectures, project-based learning, continuous assessments and a dedicated Learning Management System.
Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains launched the initiative along with former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia in the presence of education experts, technology partners and senior officials. Bains said the programme marked a new phase for Punjab’s education system, moving from its legacy of agricultural leadership towards becoming a centre for innovation and artificial intelligence.

The curriculum has been developed after studying international AI education models from countries including Singapore, Finland, the UAE and the United States. Officials said the programme has also been aligned with UNESCO’s Ethical AI Framework to ensure students learn responsible, safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence while meeting global standards.
The second phase of the project will expand AI education to Classes I to VII, ensuring that students receive age-appropriate exposure to the technology from their early years. The programme is expected to eventually cover 25,172 schools and nearly 31.5 lakh students across Punjab, with more than two lakh teachers planned to receive training for integrating AI into classroom learning.
The initiative builds on PSEB’s earlier AI pilot programme conducted with FA-AI, which included a statewide AI Hackathon showcasing student innovations. The implementation will receive technological support from Neeev AI along with collaborations involving Google, Intel, Canva and FA-AI to strengthen AI literacy, teacher training and innovation.
Bains said Punjab’s move follows global trends where countries such as China and South Korea have already introduced AI learning at school levels. Former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia praised the initiative, calling it a milestone that could make Punjab a national benchmark in AI education. PSEB Chairman Dr Amarpal Singh said AI will now become a core part of compulsory Computer Science learning, with student achievements in the subject reflected in board certificates.
