Punjab Floods: Medics Race to Save Lives

Medical Teams Deployed to Aid Flood-Hit Punjab Villages.

As the Beas and Sutlej rivers swell, inundating villages across Punjab, the state has launched an extensive medical response to support affected communities. Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh announced the deployment of 438 rapid response teams, 323 mobile medical units, and 172 ambulances to deliver critical healthcare to flood-stricken areas. “Our mission is to ensure no one is left without medical aid during this crisis,” Singh emphasized, underscoring the state’s readiness to tackle any health emergencies triggered by the floods.

Villages in Kapurthala, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, and Fazilka have been severely impacted, with floodwaters cutting off access to several regions. In Gurdaspur, seven villages remain isolated, prompting the health department to introduce innovative boat ambulances. “This swift action enabled us to rescue eight pregnant women, one of whom safely delivered her baby under medical care,” Singh said. Similar efforts are underway in Ferozepur’s Kalu village, ensuring timely aid to those stranded.

To combat potential outbreaks, health camps in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur have already treated 241 patients for conditions like diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, fever, skin allergies, and eye infections. With over 2,000 hospital beds on standby, Punjab is well-equipped to handle any epidemic, Singh assured. He urged residents to consume only boiled or chlorinated water, avoid stale food, and contact the toll-free helpline 104 for health concerns. “Our health staff are fully stocked with chlorine tablets, ORS, and essential medicines,” he added, noting seamless connections to advanced care facilities if needed.

The Punjab government is working in close coordination with the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, military, and NGOs to ensure comprehensive support in high-risk districts. “There’s no shortage of medicines, and our teams are operating round-the-clock to protect citizens,” Singh reaffirmed.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state president Aman Arora called on party workers to join relief efforts. “The government is doing everything possible, but this crisis demands collective action,” Arora said in a statement. He highlighted the administration’s proactive measures, with local teams and the State Disaster Response Force working tirelessly to meet the needs of affected residents, particularly in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Fazilka. Arora urged volunteers to collaborate with authorities or act independently to provide relief, emphasizing, “Standing with people in times of crisis is our moral duty.”

As Punjab battles the devastating floods, the state’s robust medical and administrative response offers hope to thousands grappling with the crisis, ensuring no one is left behind.
