Pune Metro Warns ‘No NOC, No Work’ After Tunnel Breach in Shukrawar Peth

Pune Metro mandates NOC after tunnel breach caused by drilling.,

The Pune Metro Rail Project has issued a strict “no-NOC, no-work” directive following a high-risk breach in an underground metro tunnel in Shukrawar Peth caused by unauthorised borewell drilling. The incident has raised serious concerns over safety and compliance in construction activities near critical metro infrastructure.

According to officials, the breach occurred when borewell drilling was carried out without prior approval near the underground metro corridor, leading to damage in the tunnel structure. The affected site is located opposite Khadak police station, where the unauthorised activity reportedly compromised the safety of the operational metro network.

In response, Pune Metro authorities have warned of stringent legal action and financial recovery from those responsible for any damage caused to metro infrastructure. The agency emphasised that such violations not only threaten structural integrity but also pose risks to public safety and ongoing metro operations.

Metro officials have reiterated that obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the metro authority is mandatory for any construction, development, or redevelopment activity within a 20-metre radius of both elevated and underground metro lines. This requirement applies to property owners, developers, housing societies, and organisations undertaking work in proximity to metro routes.

Chandrashekhar Tambekar, spokesperson for Pune Metro, stressed that adherence to these guidelines is critical to prevent accidents and ensure the long-term sustainability of metro infrastructure. He added that failure to comply with the rules would invite strict penalties, including legal proceedings and recovery of repair costs.

The incident has prompted authorities to step up monitoring and enforcement measures across the city, particularly in areas close to metro corridors. Officials are expected to conduct inspections and increase awareness among stakeholders to prevent similar breaches in the future and safeguard vital urban transport infrastructure.
