Puducherry Police Inspect Uppalam Port Ground Ahead of Vijay’s December 9 Rally
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s mega public meeting hangs in balance.
Senior Puducherry police officials on Thursday evening conducted a detailed inspection of Uppalam Port Ground, the proposed venue for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay’s public meeting scheduled for December 9. The visit comes days after the Union Territory administration rejected permission for a grand roadshow, forcing the party to pivot to a stationary public address.
TVK functionaries had submitted a fresh application to Senior Superintendent of Police Kalaivanan seeking approval to host Vijay at the coastal ground. Responding promptly, SSP Kalaivanan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) B. Sathiyasundaram personally assessed the site, examining stage positioning, entry-exit points, crowd management feasibility, and parking arrangements.
The inspection revealed significant waterlogging across the ground due to recent rains, with large patches of stagnant water visible. Police officials expressed concern over the India Meteorological Department’s forecast predicting moderate to heavy rainfall over the next week, warning that further downpours could render the venue unusable and access roads unusable.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, DCP Sathiyasundaram stated, “We have received the petition for the public meeting. The ground currently has accumulated rainwater and weather predictions indicate more rain ahead. We have conveyed these concerns to the organisers and asked them to submit an updated plan. A final decision on granting permission will be taken only after reviewing their response.”
With thousands of TVK supporters expected to converge from across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the uncertainty over the venue has intensified speculation about whether Vijay’s first major political outing in the Union Territory will receive administrative clearance or face another setback ahead of the crucial December 9 event.
