Project SANGAM: Delhi Traffic Police Launches Citizen-Led Platform to Fix City Roads

Delhi Traffic Police partners with RWAs and civic agencies to collaboratively address road congestion.

The Delhi Traffic Police has launched a first-of-its-kind citizen-driven initiative aimed at addressing traffic congestion in the national capital. The programme, titled Project SANGAM — Synergistic Action and Networked Governance for Area Mobility — seeks to transform traffic management into a shared civic responsibility rather than a purely enforcement-led exercise.

The initiative was rolled out following directions from Taranjit Singh Sandhu earlier this month. It brings together key stakeholders, including Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), and civic bodies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Public Works Department. Through this collaborative platform, authorities aim to tap into local knowledge and community participation to develop practical, area-specific traffic solutions.

Project SANGAM is built on the idea that residents and local associations are often best positioned to identify on-ground challenges and suggest workable solutions. By encouraging citizens to actively participate in planning and implementation, the initiative moves away from traditional top-down policing models. Officials believe this approach will lead to more sustainable and widely accepted traffic management strategies across congested areas of the city.

The move comes amid growing concerns over traffic bottlenecks in key areas such as markets and residential hubs, where congestion has been a persistent issue. By fostering coordination between citizens and civic agencies, the Delhi Traffic Police hopes to streamline movement, improve road safety, and create a more responsive urban mobility system in the capital.
