Probe Into Chandranath Rath Murder Reveals Mystery Vehicle And Fake Number Plates
Probe reveals fake plates and ambush plot in Chandranath Rath killing.
The killing of Chandranath Rath, a close aide of senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with police launching a major investigation into what officials suspect was a planned and coordinated assassination.Rath, a former Indian Air Force employee and a trusted member of Adhikari’s political circle, was shot dead late Wednesday night near Doharia in Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district. According to preliminary findings, motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly followed Rath’s white Scorpio SUV before intercepting the vehicle and opening fire while he was still seated inside.
Investigators described the attack as “execution-style,” pointing to the precision and timing of the assault. Police sources said Rath sustained bullet injuries to the right side of his abdomen and chest, with doctors reportedly informing investigators that the bullets pierced his heart. He was declared dead shortly after the shooting.Authorities are also probing reports that the attackers may have used a vehicle with fake registration plates as part of the operation. CCTV footage from nearby roads and traffic checkpoints is being examined to identify the route taken by the assailants before and after the attack. Security agencies are also investigating whether Rath’s movements were tracked in advance.
The murder comes at a politically sensitive moment in West Bengal, only days after the BJP secured a major victory in the state Assembly elections by winning 207 seats in the 294-member House. The results dealt a significant blow to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and have already triggered heightened political tensions and sporadic unrest in several districts.Following the killing, security presence was significantly increased across Kolkata and adjoining areas amid fears of retaliatory violence and political confrontation. BJP leaders accused rivals of fostering an atmosphere of intimidation, while police officials appealed for calm and assured that those responsible would be identified and arrested.
