Priyanka Gandhi Pushes for More Rural Roads in Wayanad
Congress MP demands increased allocation for tribal-heavy district
Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has urged the Kerala government to allocate additional kilometers for rural road construction in the hilly district, citing its unique challenges, including a high density of tribal population and its status as an aspirational district. In a statement issued by the Congress party, Gandhi emphasized the need for enhanced connectivity to drive development in health and education sectors in Wayanad.
Gandhi appealed to the Kerala State Rural Roads Development Agency (KSRRDA) to prioritize tribal villages, in line with guidelines that advocate special consideration for areas with significant tribal populations. She highlighted that Wayanad, despite its developmental needs, has been allocated only 20 kilometers of the 500 kilometers planned for rural roads across Kerala under the current scheme. Calling this allocation “completely inadequate,” she pressed for a fairer share to address the district’s connectivity challenges.
Additionally, Gandhi requested the state government to expedite the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for 300 roads already approved by the National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (NRIDA) for Wayanad. Improved road infrastructure, she argued, is critical for the district’s socio-economic progress, particularly for its tribal communities.

The Congress MP’s advocacy aligns with her ongoing efforts to uplift Wayanad, a region prone to natural disasters like landslides, which further underscore the need for robust infrastructure. Her call comes amidst broader demands for equitable development in Kerala’s aspirational districts, reinforcing the importance of tailored policies for marginalized areas.
