Priya Kapur Upholds Sunjay’s Legacy Amid Intensifying Inheritance Dispute

Widow asserts leadership role as Rs 30,000 crore estate feud escalates.

Amid escalating legal disputes over the vast estate of her late husband, Sunjay Kapur, Priya Sachdev Kapur, the business tycoon's widow, undertook a two-day visit to Sona Comstar's Chennai manufacturing plant and R&D center. The trip, documented through Instagram posts, coincides with heightened tensions in a family conflict involving Kapur's ex-wife, Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, and their children, Samaira and Kiaan, who have accused Priya of forging Sunjay's will to exclude them from inheritance rights. Priya's engagement with the facility's leadership and workforce underscores her commitment to the company's operations, even as the courtroom battle over an estimated Rs 30,000 crore fortune intensifies following Sunjay's sudden death in the UK on June 12, 2025.

In her detailed caption accompanying images of interactions with engineers and staff, Priya highlighted the human element driving innovation at the plant. She described walking the shopfloor, observing meticulous engineering, and in-house machinery development, attributing the progress to "quiet determination" aligned with Sunjay's philosophy of pursuing excellence. A poignant touch was her reference to an African Talisay tree planted by Sunjay, symbolizing enduring legacy amid personal loss. Priya emphasized that true leadership involves presence, listening, and caring for employees, stating that when leaders prioritize people, "quality, innovation, and growth" naturally follow. She concluded with pride in the team's momentum, signaling her intent to sustain the company's trajectory.

Sunjay Kapur, former chairman of Sona Comstar Engineering, amassed significant wealth through the automotive components firm, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $1.2 billion (approximately Rs 10,300 crore) at the time of death, peaking at $1.6 billion in prior years. As the sole beneficiary of the RK Family Trust, which controls promoter stakes in Sona Comstar via Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd, his portfolio extended far beyond the company's valuation, encompassing diverse assets. Priya's role in overseeing these enterprises post-Sunjay's passing positions her at the center of both operational continuity and inheritance disputes, where her actions are scrutinized through the lens of familial allegations.

The estate contention centers on claims by Samaira and Kiaan that Priya fabricated the will to disinherit them from shares and sideline Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, ensuring only Priya benefits. Represented by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, the children highlighted linguistic anomalies, such as feminine pronouns referring to Sunjay, as evidence of tampering. These assertions have fueled a protracted legal scrutiny, with the case gaining traction in recent months. The dispute not only challenges the document's authenticity but also probes the distribution of control over Sona Comstar's substantial holdings, amplifying stakes in a conglomerate pivotal to India's automotive sector.

Priya's legal team, led by senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, countered the forgery narrative by arguing that a fabricated will would unlikely contain multiple errors, including misspelled names, and that the signature remains undisputed. This defense underscores the complexities of probate proceedings in high-value estates, where procedural oversights do not equate to fraud. As the litigation unfolds, Priya's proactive involvement in company affairs, exemplified by the Chennai visit, reflects a resolve to honor Sunjay's vision while navigating personal and professional upheavals. The outcome could reshape inheritance precedents and corporate governance in family-run enterprises.
