President, Vice President Express Condolences Over Nalanda Temple Stampede
Nalanda temple stampede kills eight; President, VP, and Bihar leaders extend condolences and aid victims.
President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed deep sorrow over the stampede at the Sheetla Mata Temple in Maghra village, Nalanda, Bihar, which claimed the lives of at least eight people, including seven women. President Murmu conveyed her condolences on social media, wishing a speedy recovery to those injured, while Vice President Radhakrishnan extended his heartfelt sympathies and prayers for the affected families.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also expressed grief and announced a compensation of Rs 6 lakh for each deceased family, with Rs 4 lakh coming from the Disaster Relief Fund and Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Water Resource Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring proper medical care for the injured, describing the incident as “heart-wrenching.”
Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha echoed the sorrow, extending condolences to the bereaved families and assuring that the state government stands firmly with those affected. Relief and rescue operations were immediately launched after panic broke out in the crowded temple during the holy occasion of Sheetlashtami in the month of Chaitra. Eyewitnesses reported that overcrowding and lack of space inside the temple led to sudden chaos and triggered the stampede.

Authorities have shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, and rescue teams continue their operations. Officials are investigating the exact cause of the incident and assessing whether adequate crowd management measures were in place. Meanwhile, local administration and temple authorities have been directed to provide all necessary assistance to victims and their families.
