President Murmu Urges Tax Officers to Follow ‘Honeybee’ Principle, Make Compliance Easier

Murmu demands smoother taxes with zero hassle for everyday payers.

In a powerful address that could reshape how India collects its revenue, President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday urged the nation's tax enforcers to treat collection like a gentle "honeybee"—sipping just enough without stinging the taxpayer into agony. Speaking to fresh Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) trainees at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, she painted a vision where filing returns feels like a breeze, not a bureaucratic battlefield, emphasizing that every rupee paid funds the dreams of a rising India from highways to hospitals.

Drawing from ancient wisdom in Chanakya's Arthashastra, Murmu reminded the young officers that governments must extract taxes sparingly, ensuring both the state and its citizens thrive. "You are active participants in India’s nation-building process," she told them, acknowledging the vital role of revenue in powering infrastructure, education, health, and social welfare. But her core message was crystal clear: the process must evolve into something seamless, transparent, and tech-savvy, ditching the outdated red tape that leaves honest filers exhausted and distrustful.

The President's timely intervention comes hot on the heels of groundbreaking GST reforms rolled out in September, hailed as a game-changer for simplifying India's tangled tax web. These updates, she noted, are laser-focused on sparking entrepreneurship, creating jobs, slashing living costs, and paving the way for inclusive growth that leaves no one behind—while championing sustainability and empowering the youth. For the trainees stepping into roles as administrators, sleuths, trade enablers, and law guardians, Murmu stressed they must juggle enforcement with empathy, shielding the economy from fraud and smuggling without choking legitimate business or global partnerships.

As the sentinels of India's economic borders, these officers aren't just collectors—they're innovators who must wield data analytics, automation, and digital tools to make compliance a citizen-friendly affair. "Integrity and fairness must remain the cornerstone," Murmu warned, calling on them to build trust through balanced actions that encourage voluntary payments over fear-driven raids. In an era of rapid global shifts, she urged adaptability and forward-thinking to keep India's tax system robust yet approachable.

Looking ahead to Viksit Bharat by 2047, the President positioned these revenue warriors as key architects of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, tasked with crafting a stable, equitable tax landscape that fuels investment and self-reliance. Her words aren't just motivational—they're a blueprint for reform, promising a future where taxpayers feel valued partners, not reluctant victims, in the grand march toward a developed nation.
