President Murmu Says Education Has Played A Transformative Role In Her Life

President Droupadi Murmu has described education as the “single-most transformative force” in her life while receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the Bucharest University of Economic Studies in Romania. The prestigious Doctor Honoris Causa was awarded to her in recognition of her contributions to public service, education, and international cooperation. The ceremony marked the conclusion of her six-day state visit to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania.

Speaking at the event, President Murmu said her personal journey demonstrated the power of education as a tool for social change. Recalling her early life in a small village and her limited financial background, she said she was the first girl from her village to attend college. She emphasized that education serves as a great equaliser because it provides opportunities regardless of a person’s background or place of birth.

The President expressed gratitude to the university’s Rector, Senate, students, and faculty members, saying she accepted the honour on behalf of the people of India as a symbol of the longstanding friendship between India and Romania. She also reflected on her earlier years as a teacher, highlighting how even simple classrooms can create lasting changes in the lives of families and communities.

Murmu stressed that universities have an important responsibility in an era of rapid technological development, including advancements in artificial intelligence. She said that scientific progress must be guided by values such as wisdom, ethics, and compassion to ensure that knowledge benefits society and contributes to human development.

Highlighting the historical and cultural connections between India and Romania, the President referred to poet Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Bucharest in 1926 and Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu’s interest in Indian philosophical texts, including the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. She said such links reflect the deep cultural exchanges between the two nations over the years.

The President’s remarks come at a time when education-related issues, including concerns over examination irregularities and paper leaks in India, have sparked protests among students. Her emphasis on fairness, inclusion, and the transformative role of education has gained significance amid ongoing discussions about strengthening the education system. The award ceremony was attended by university students, faculty members, and dignitaries from both countries.
