President Lula Pays Homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat During India Visit
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva honors Gandhi and strengthens India-Brazil ties during his state visit.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva began his state visit to India on a symbolic note by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi on Saturday. He laid a floral wreath at the memorial and observed a moment of silence, reflecting the shared values of democracy and historical ties between India and Brazil.
Earlier, President Lula was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He received the Guard of Honour in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the official commencement of his engagements in India.
Following the ceremonial reception, President Lula and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House. Discussions centered on deepening cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and strategic sectors, highlighting the growing partnership between the two nations.

President Lula also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit. The meetings emphasized expanding bilateral collaboration, including initiatives in renewable energy, digital technology, and sustainable development projects.
On Friday, he inaugurated the first New Delhi office of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex). The office aims to promote Brazilian products and services globally while attracting foreign investments to key sectors of Brazil’s economy.
Brazil’s Ambassador to India, Kenneth da Nobrega, praised the strong rapport between President Lula and Prime Minister Modi, describing them as not only leaders but close friends. He also highlighted India’s successful hosting of the AI Impact Summit 2026 as an example of deepening India-Brazil cooperation.
